Theology on the Prairie

  • Camp of the Cross Ministries 1228A 47th Avenue Northwest Garrison, ND, 58540 United States (map)

About the Event:

This event will run from 5pm on Sunday, April 29th through Noon on May 1st after lunch!

The Christian faith is handed from one believer to another as a story. It is a story that goes all the way back to the book of Genesis and stretches through the Scriptures, across the Church's history, and into the lanes of our rural ND communities and throughout the streets of our towns and cities.

Telling that story is something that present-day Christians long to do, but are not always confident to actually attempt.

Through examining our own stories, the stories of our congregation communities, and the stories that connect real, everyday people to the likes of Ruth and Abraham, Solomon and Peter, this workshop will equip the parish leader to return to their congregations with a new lease on preaching and teaching. The "old, old story," that we love to tell but often neglect to pass along will find new means of expression.

About the Presenter:

Pastor Paul Hoffman of Seattle is no stranger to the Western North Dakota Synod. Since keynoting the annual rostered leaders' conference in Medora in 2014, Paul has regularly returned to our synod as a pastoral mentor, leading groups for Scripture, prayer, and pastoral enrichment at Camp of the Cross and at sites in Minot and Bismarck. Through his frequent trips to our synod, he is developing an increasing awareness of the joys and challenges of ministry in this geography.

Paul is the author of several books including, Faith Forming Faith and Faith Shaping Ministry. His interest in the individual, congregational, and the Church's story grows out of his deep baptismal centered theology. At the core of every disciple's life is the story of her/his baptism, and its continuing formation.

Paul travels in the church have taken him well beyond North Dakota. He is currently leading pastoral mentoring groups in PA, DE, MD, and WA. He is a frequent guest of synods as a keynote speaker, workshop leader, and resource. He will be one of our four lead speakers at the Institute of Liturgical Studies at Valparaiso University in April and leader for Catechumenal training in the St. Paul area synod in November.
